On February 22, 7:00 pm there will be a service of worship in the sanctuary.  As a part of the service there will be the imposition of the ashes and the observance of the Lord’s Supper.

Ash Wednesday is the first  day of the observance of Lent.  Lent is the period of the church calendar from Ash Wednesday to Easter.  The purpose of Lent is to prepare us through prayer, repentance, almsgiving, and self-denial for Holy Week and the death and resurrection of Jesus on Easter Sunday.

Jesus spent forty days fasting in the desert before the beginning of his public ministry, during which he endured temptation by Satan.  Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of this forty day liturgical period of prayer and fasting.

Ash Wednesday derives its name from the practice of placing ashes on the foreheads as a sign of mourning and repentance to God. The ashes also remind us of our own mortality.  The ashes used are typically gathered after the palms from the previous year's Palm Sunday are burned.
